Arranging and organising activities related to funerals are normally left in charge of undertakers, who are also known as funeral directors. To be successful in this profession the person performing these tasks must possess certain essential and unique skills and qualities.

An undertaker must be energetic and be ready to work at odd hours, as he should be on call 24 hours a day. He must be ready to spend most of his time outside because of the nature of the task.

To be an undertaker, a person must be able to interact well and be open to the opinions of others. With customers hailing from many religions, traditions and cultures, he should be able to interact with and manage each one of them successfully. A sensitive and compassionate attitude will be of excellent help in this job. As an undertaker, he is also expected to comfort the family in time of grief, and he must not allow distress or sorrow to cloud his mental faculties.

Although the job is by nature sombre and serious, the undertakers must impart an aura of serenity to the funeral service instead of more grief or sadness through their attitude.

Knowledge of various religious beliefs, practices and sentiments, and due respect for these helps undertakers find success in their profession. As various people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is advantageous to have knowledge of these.

Excellent management and the power to organise are essential skills for an undertaker. He must also have leadership abilities and must be able to interact with a large number of people - from the clergy members to the local florist.

As the undertaker will be in charge of obtaining all clearances and following all regulations related to the event, he will have to thoroughly know such procedures and legal matters. He must also be aware of the official procedures to be followed for obtaining death certificates, insurance claims etc.

Finally, he should essentially be able to and be qualified to drive vehicles like hearses and limousines during the funeral ceremony.
